Quality Health Travel for Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to insert false teeth and “bridge” the gap between missing teeth. Two “crowns” are put on the two teeth on either side of the gap and false teeth are then placed in-between.

Those who have lost natural teeth through disease, tooth decay or injury will find that dentures and bridges can repair their smile. If you don’t have support, it’s possible that some facial muscles could sag, resulting in an older appearance. Additionally, loss of teeth can cause difficulty in eating and speaking clearly.

Conventional dentures are placed in the mouth after all tissue has healed, while immediate dentures are inserted right after the tooth has been completely extracted. A bridge, also called overdenture or fixed partial denture, is a removable denture that fits over leftover natural teeth or other implants which provide support for the dentures.

Procedure information

You won’t be able to get dentures or a bridge in one visit. For a bridge, adjoining teeth must be re-contoured by removing some enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them. Impressions of the teeth are taken for the model, from which the bridge and/or conventional dentures will be made. You will probably also receive a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth and gums while the final bridge is being made.

The next dental visit will entail the installation of the permanent bridge or conventional dentures. You may require many more visits to check the final fit and bite. If you are receiving immediate dentures, you will have a mould taken on a first visit, before the teeth are fully extracted.

Recovery time

Your new dentures or bridge may feel strange and uncomfortable for a few weeks. They may even feel a bit loose until your cheek and tongue muscles learn to compensate for them. Some people have soreness or irritation and may even find an increase in saliva production. However, these problems should lessen over time.

With immediate dentures, the patient should be aware that gum tissue and bones can shrink during the first 6 months of healing and return visits may be required to realign the dentures once everything is healed in about 6 to 8 weeks.
